Gaylene Pron

Dr Pron has been an instructor and researcher at the University of Toronto. Her research career has included the ground breaking Ontario Uterine Fibroid Embolization multi-center clinical trial involving treatment alternatives to hysterectomy. As a consultant with various hospital-based multidisciplinary healthcare programs. Her healthcare program involvements have included congenital and craniofacial malformations, chronic pain, women’s pelvic health and spinal disorders. She has also been a clinical epidemiologist for several branches of the Ontario Ministry of Health involved in diverse health technology assessments to inform Ministry health care policy and funding decisions. She is also an associate professor at the University of Toronto with appointments in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation.

Her scientific reviews have focused on high profile cases such as HPV vaccination for cervical cancer, cerebrospinal venous insufficiency interventions for multiple sclerosis and PSA prostate cancer screening. Other evidence investigations have included projects on medical devices and therapies for common public health conditions such as: psoriasis; varicose veins; chronic pain; vertebral fractures; and degenerative disc disease. Investigations into internet-based cardiac device monitoring systems that have broader potential health system impacts and aging in the community with social isolation were unique and particularly challenging areas of investigation.

Her interests continue to involve new health care technology and she currently consults on minimally invasive interventions for osteoporotic and cancer-related vertebral compression fractures, occupational lead-dust exposure and management of blunt trauma cerebrovascular injuries.
