Impact
The focus of Dr. Karanicolas’ research is designing and leading randomized controlled trials in surgical oncology. He has spearheaded the establishment of the HepatoPancreaticoBiliary Community of Surgical Oncologists: Clinical, Evaluative, and Prospective Trials Team (HPB CONCEPT Team), a Canada-wide consensus-based framework for liver and pancreas cancer research. The HPB CONCEPT team’s goals are to improve the care of patients with HPB cancers through investigator-initiated research and to provide a forum for developing high-impact clinical trials. In addition, Dr. Karanicolas developed the Innovative, Multicenter, Patient-centered Approach to Clinical Trials in Surgery (IMPACTS) program to address uncertainty in surgical and perioperative care by conducting high-quality, patient-centered pragmatic trials using novel approaches to methodology and technology. As of 2018, Dr. Karanicolas’ was appointed as the medical and scientific director for the Centre for Clinical Trial Support (CCTS) at Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI). The mandate of CCTS is to facilitate the development and design of clinical trials and research projects as well as to ensure regulatory compliance of investigator-initiated studies at SRI. Through this role, Dr. Karanicolas oversees all regulated clinical trials where SRI is the sponsor.
