The Application of Electrical Stimulation for Reducing Daytime Leg Fluid Accumulation and Alleviating Sleep Apnea

Abstract: The Sleep Lab at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute has demonstrated that fluid accumulation in the legs during the day can lead to a shift of fluid into the neck at night when lying down to sleep. The result is an increased pressure on the upper-airway, leading to more severe sleep apnea. In this session, HCTP Doctoral Fellow Daniel Vena (Institute of Biomedical and Biomaterials Engineering, University of Toronto) will present on his research which aims to better understand the pathophysiology of airway collapse due to fluid shift and evaluate the use of electrical stimulation of the calf muscles in reducing daytime leg fluid accumulation and alleviating sleep apnea. Professor Gillian Einstein (Department of Psychology, University of Toronto) is the discussant and HCTP Doctoral Fellow Tizneem Jiancaro (Rehabilitation Science & IBBME, University of Toronto) will moderate the session.
