Embracing Complexity – “We must know the system in order to strengthen it” How Systems Analysis Can Inform District Health Planning Processes: Lessons from Ethiopia

Kadia Petricca, PhD, is a global health researcher with over 13 years of experience working on a variety of global health issues, largely focused in Ethiopia, Namibia, and Tanzania. Her expertise and experiences include spearheading the design, implementation, and analysis of a number of research projects in the area of communicable and non-communicable disease, health services research, district health planning and community health worker (CHW) policy. She recently returned from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where she worked as a Research Associate for Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. While based in Tanzania, she collaborated with researchers at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to undertake research in support of a national CHW policy being implemented throughout the country. Dr. Petricca holds a PhD in Health Policy from the Institute of Health Policy, Management & Evaluation with the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto, and a Master of Public Health in Developing Countries from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Dr. Petricca will focus her presentation on the application of systems theory to completing a systems analysis of the district health planning process in Ethiopia which focused on understanding systemic barriers and facilitators. She will explore the application of the Transformative Systems Change Framework to understanding the planning process, and reflect on its utility in contributing to a more nuanced understanding of the system’s structure. The findings from her work are presently in manuscript.
