Remembering Prof. Murray Krahn

We regret to share that IHPME Prof. Murray Krahn died on July 1, 2022.

Prof. Krahn had a long and distinguished history at IHPME and the University of Toronto.

He was a global leader in Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and economic evaluation. He held many leadership positions including serving as president of the Society for Medical Decision Making (SMDM) as well as being the (founding) director of the Toronto Health Economics and Technology Assessment (THETA) Collaborative for 13 years, where he collaborated with many IHPME colleagues.

Prof. Krahn’s impact was recognized by numerous prestigious awards over his career including a including a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Health Technology Assessment; CADTH’s Dr. Jill M. Sanders Award of Excellence in Health Technology Assessment; and the SMDM’s Career Achievement Award, among others.

At IHPME, Prof. Krahn was known as a generous and dedicated supervisor and mentor to many students and early-career researchers. He introduced and championed cost effectiveness analysis at the Institute and served as Associate Director of the Clinical Epidemiology and Heath Care Research Program within IHPME. His contributions to IHPME were recognized by the Eugenie Stuart Award for Excellence in Course/Program Development and Coordination

Our community will miss him deeply. All are invited to a memorial service at the Kingsway Baptist Church in Etobicoke. The service will be in person and livestreamed. If you would like to make a donation in Murray’s honour, his family have suggested you give to the MCC Canada-Ukraine Emergency Response. For more details about the memorial service, please consult his obituary.
