Introduction

This handbook is designed for new and current students in the MHSc Health Administration Program at the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation (IHPME), University of Toronto ( U of T ). The purpose of this handbook is to provide specific details about the program’s structure, courses, schedule, program operations and student expectations during your studies.

Graduate Studies at the University of Toronto – Academic Structure

The School of Graduate Studies (SGS) is responsible for all graduate studies at U of T.  They develop and implement regulations and operating procedures as well as set and administer the academic requirements of all graduate programs including admissions, academic activities (courses), maintenance of graduate student records and verification of the successful completion of each student’s degree requirements prior to graduation.

The Dalla Lana School of Public Health is our faculty.  The Dean of our faculty is Dr. Adalsteinn Brown . The Dean is responsible for developing and implementing strategic directions and allocating resources across the School of Public Health.

The Graduate Department within IHPME administers all graduate program within the institute. The head of the Graduate Department is our Acting Director Dr. Audrey Laporte, who is responsible for maintaining the standards and policies of SGS.  Our Graduate Coordinator, Dr. Whitney Berta, is responsible for day-to-day operations of the Graduate Department.

The Master of Health Science Degree (MHSc)

The MHSc of Health Administration is a professional master’s degree program designed to prepare students for senior leadership, policy and planning positions in health services organizations.  To obtain the MHSc degree, students must complete 20 half-credit courses including at least one full credit in a practicum placement or project of the student’s choice.

Program Mission

To prepare high potential students to lead in complex and dynamic health services environments.  Drawing on the best evidence in leadership, business and health policy, this comprehensive, modular program uses team and problem-based learning to develop critical health leadership competencies.
