Prerequisite
Objectives
After taking this course, students will be able to:
- Describe a range of tools, including conceptual and theoretical frameworks, that can be used to compare health systems and policies
- Categorize health system structures and typologies to support comparative research
- Apply a conceptual framework to compare and contrast health policies, reforms or systems across jurisdictions
Description
Each country’s health system and policies are largely shaped by historical, political, social, and economic contexts; but in general, they face similar challenges such as rising expenditures, limited accessibility, poor patient responsiveness, limited coordination across the health continuum, and public health and health system threats from both communicable and non-communicable diseases. This comparative health systems and policy course is intended to equip students with a range of tools, including theoretical and conceptual frameworks and typologies, to compare health systems in different countries or regions/provinces within a country.
