Abstract

In recent years there has been a growing movement to engage patients and to inform decisions by the more formal study of patient preferences in health care. A greater understanding of what is important to the patient, as the user of health care services, can help inform decision making and increase the value of health care services. This presentation will highlight discrete choice experiments as a method to measure patient preferences and discuss how these methods can be used to explore what is important to patients and how they consider trade-offs amongst types of health care tests and treatments. It will also discuss how these methods are being explored and applied in the regulatory context to promote more patient-centered decision making.
