An Introduction to Dissemination & Implementation Science

Dr. Melanie Barwick, Hospital for Sick Children & IHPME and Dr. Katie Dainty, North York General Hospital & IHPME

Melanie Barwick, PhD, CPsych is a Senior Scientist in the SickKids’ Research Institute and affiliated with the SickKids’ Learning Institute and SickKids Centre for Global Child Health. She is Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Professor Status Only in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto. She is a Governing Board Director for Children’s Mental Health Ontario (CMHO), Associate Editor for the journal, Evidence & Policy, and on the Editorial Board of the upcoming Implementation Evidence and Practice (SIRC). She is an internationally recognized expert in implementation science and knowledge translation (KT) working in many areas of health, mental health, and global health. Her research aims to improve the implementation of evidence into practice and to broaden the reach of evidence more generally to support decision making, practice, policy, knowledge and awareness. She developed and provides professional development in KT internationally through the Specialist Knowledge Translation Training™ and the Knowledge Translation Professional Certificate™ (http://tinyurl.com/p2p5du6). The KTPC is recognized as a Leading Practice by Accreditation Canada and has over 380 graduates worldwide.  Since 2004, SKTT™ and SKTTAustralia™ have trained over 3000 learners internationally.

Dr. Katie Dainty holds a Research Chair in Patient-Centred Outcomes at North York General Hospital and  is an Assistant Professor of Health Systems Research in the Institute for Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. She holds a PhD from the University of Toronto and a Master’s degree in clinical research from Western University. Her expertise is in health systems research, patient-centred outcomes and qualitative social science. Over the past decade she has developed an internationally recognised research portfolio around innovative service models that seek to better meet the needs of people with complex and long-term health problems, with a particular focus on improving survivorship for survivors of sudden cardiac arrest and their families. Dr. Dainty is also a member of the American Heart Association Subcommittee on Science, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Resuscitation Advisory Committee and the Canadian Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium.

Dissemination & Implementation Science: Explained & Emerging

The Series will feature leading scholars in the areas of dissemination and implementation science, who will engage seminar participants in discussions around a variety of topics including: differentiating dissemination and implementation science and situating them within the broader KT domain; what is knowledge and approaches to its generation; the history and evolution of dissemination and implementation science; dominant and promising theory and frameworks for DIS; research approaches, methods and methodological challenges in implementation science; de-implementation and other thorny implementation issues; network perspectives on D&I; sustainability research; and contemporary research on scale up & scale out.
