The Quest for Urban Health Solutions
Research that seeks to improve the health of people who are marginalized and disadvantaged has great challenges and rewards. Drawing on his experience conducting studies that address homelessness, housing, poverty, and health, Dr. Hwang will discuss research that seeks to have impact in the realms of both health care and the social determinants of health.
Dr. Stephen Hwang is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto, with cross-appointments in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and IHPME. He is a staff physician in general internal medicine at St. Michael’s Hospital, where he is the Director of the Centre for Urban Health Solutions. He holds the Chair in Homelessness, Housing, and Health at the University of Toronto and St. Michael’s Hospital. Dr. Hwang is known for his research on interventions to improve the health of people experiencing homelessness and to address the problem of homelessness itself.
