DISCUSSION
Intersects Between Women’s and Children’s Health and Rights: A Global Perspective

Dr. Dorothy Shaw, MBChB, FRCSC, FRCOG, CEC, CCPE
Vice President, Medical Affairs
British Columbia’s Women’s Hospital & Health Centre

Life cycle challenges for girls and women include giving birth, surviving childhood, FGM/C, avoiding sexual violence, reaching reproductive capability before maturity, avoiding unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, infertility and more. Globally, women are disproportionately affected by poverty and live in cultures where women and girls may not be valued equally let alone have their health-related rights respected.  Discrimination results in challenges such as access to health care essential to the highest attainable standard of health. Global mortality rates for children have significantly improved and attention is focused on the newborn, highly dependent on maternal health. The relationship between human rights and reality will be used to explore these topics and provoke discussion.

BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Shaw is the Vice President, Medical Affairs for British Columbia’s Women’s Hospital, responsible for quality and safety in patient care using patient-centred, cost-effective approaches.  She is a Clinical Professor in the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Medical Genetics at the University of British Columbia (UBC). As the first woman President of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) from 2006-2009, she launched 2 major initiatives to address maternal and newborn mortality and the prevention of unsafe abortion. She is the inaugural chair of the Canadian Network for Maternal Newborn Child Health (2010), completing her term in November 2014.
