Child and youth population health assessments are influenced by the quality and utility of the information sources. Although Ontario lacks a coordinated system for child and youth health, the province has access to individual data sources that could provide information on younger populations.

The purpose of the Child and Youth Health Data Sources project was to create an inventory of existing data sources that measure child and youth health in Ontario. The data sources were additionally assessed for strengths and limitations across dimensions of data source quality and utility including coverage, sustainability and funding, and accessibility. Information from this project can be used to inform data users about child and youth health data sources that are available, and additionally be used as a starting point for future discussions regarding the development of a combined child and youth population health assessment system.

Speakers: Bessie Ng and Dr. Ken Allison

Bessie Ng is a research assistant in the Health Promotion, Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention (HPCDIP) department at Public Health Ontario (PHO).  Her current major project is the evaluation of Daily Physical Activity (DPA) policy implementation in Ontario elementary schools.

Dr. Ken Allison is senior scientist in the HPCDIP department at PHO and associate professor in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto. He is the principal investigator on a series of studies evaluating DPA policy implementation in Ontario.

Public Health Ontario Grand Rounds are approved for continuing medical education from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. PHO Grand Rounds are also approved by Council of Professional Experience for professional development hours (PDHs) for members of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).
