Khaled Almilaji
Speaker Bio – Khaled Almilaji, a Syrian doctor, was unable to finish his specialization in head & neck surgery because of the war in Syria. He started as an activist for democracy in 2011, which led to his arrest and torture later in that same year. He continued his work with humanitarian aid in April 2012 establishing the Health Department of the Humanitarian Office of the Syrian opposition in April 2013.
He led several national projects including co-founding the Early Warning Alert & Response Network ‘EWARN’ for communicable diseases in all areas that were not under the Syrian regime control mid of 2013. He Led the Polio vaccination campaign in northern Syria in 2014 as the administrative coordinator of this campaign. He also launched the underground hospitals initiative early in 2014, founded independent NGO in turkey ‘2014’ that focused on delivering health services to people in need inside Syria. This NGO launched many national projects, the latest project is Health Information System in northern Syria.
Khaled is currently completing his Masters of Health Informatics at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health. He is still managing his humanitarian team in Turkey & Syria. Earlier this year he was awarded with other Canadian colleagues by her majesty the Queen Elizabeth II the Meriterious Service Medal for humanitarian work .
