Bringing the body back to HCTP:

A qualitative study of embodiment among physically disabled women during the perinatal period

March 25, 2015

Health Sciences Building room 412

3:00-4:30 p.m.

Abstract: Although pregnancy, labour, birth, and motherhood have important health and identity implications for all women, health and social science research on the perinatal period has primarily focused on non-disabled women. In this seminar, HCTP Doctoral Fellow Lesley Tarasoff (Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto) will present preliminary findings from her qualitative dissertation study exploring how physically disabled women experience the perinatal period, with an emphasis on barriers to care, ways of thinking about embodiment, and the importance of considering the body in context when providing care. Professor Barbara Gibson (Physical Therapy, University of Toronto) is the discussant and HCTP Doctoral Fellow Farzan Sasangohar (Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, University of Toronto) will moderate the session. Please check the website for more information on Lesley’s seminar.
