How Complexity Science Can Inform Scale-Up & Spread in Health Care

  • April 20 Recording – [Adobe Connect Webinar]

Holly J. Lanham, Ph.D., MBA, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio; an Investigator at the Center for Health Systems Research at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System; and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Information, Risk, and Operations Management at the McCombs School of Business, The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Lanham is a health services researcher with knowledge and expertise in health information technology, organizational behavior, complexity science and qualitative research methods. Her primary research interest is in the application of complexity science, a theoretical lens that focuses research inquiry on the nonlinearity in systems, interdependencies, and uncertainty, to better understand and improve health care delivery systems. Dr. Lanham received her MBA and PhD in Information Systems from the McCombs School of Business, The University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Lanham will focus her presentation on the application of complexity science and complex adaptive systems theory to understanding barriers and facilitators to scale up and spread of improvements in health care delivery systems. Health care delivery systems struggle to scale up effective practices across diverse settings. These failures are often attributed to a lack of consideration for variation in local contexts among different health care delivery settings. Dr. Lanham will discuss the role of self-organization, relationships and sensemaking the success (or failure) of scale up and spread and reflect on these ideas as applied to the problems of reducing hospital acquired infections, improving HIV medication adherence, and understanding differences in how physicians incorporate electronic health records into their work.
