Surain Roberts is the Scientific Lead of GEMINI, Canada’s largest hospital clinical data research network and one of few such examples globally. GEMINI collects detailed clinical and administrative data from >35 Ontario hospitals, which are used by a large community of researchers to gain insights into patient care and improve patient outcomes. Surain oversees GEMINI’s research activities, providing methodological direction across a wide range of clinical areas, including the impact of processes of care on patient outcomes, effectiveness of therapies, and clinical prediction. He is also the methods lead for the General Medicine Quality Improvement Network (GeMQIN), a partnership between GEMINI and Ontario Health that produces annual audit and feedback reports for physicians and hospitals.
Surain is a health outcomes researcher and biostatistician whose work spans multiple clinical areas. His current research leverages administrative and electronic health record data to learn about the quality of inpatient care, risk adjustment methods to assess the quality of hospital care, and the development & evaluation of prediction tools to inform risk stratification.
Surain is a Scientist at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute. In his graduate work, Surain co-led the creation of the Canadian Network for Autoimmune Liver disease (CaNAL), a pan-Canadian registry collecting both retrospective and prospective long-term follow-up of individual patient data.
