SGS Financial Assistance Programs

SGS offers several financial assistance grants including:
SGS Conference Grant
SGS Research Travel Grant
SGS Parental Grant

SGS Indigenous Graduate Travel Award

This award provides financial assistance to Indigenous graduate students for travel and participation in educational and experiential learning activities specifically focused on Indigenous student or educational issues, such as Indigenous-focused events, workshops, meetings, field trips, competitions, and other educational initiatives. Applications are available throughout the year by contacting the Supporting Aboriginal Graduate Enhancement (SAGE) group at the First Nations House.

SGS Accessibility Grant

The grant supports students registered with Accessibility Services to offset significant, unexpected educational expenses not covered by other financial aid programs. Eligible expenses must relate to approved academic accommodations necessary for meeting the demands of the graduate program. Students should consult their Accessibility Advisor directly for guidance and application procedures. Applications are available throughout the year.

Short-Term Assistance: Emergency Grants and Loans

Students with financial need are expected to apply for Government Student Financial Aid programs (e.g., OSAP) and complete the Need Navigator application to be considered for UTAPS and other grants and awards that may be available by their division. Students are also encouraged to speak with their Registrar or Graduate Unit Administrator, who can help identify local financial aid programs and contact the SGS Financial Aid and Advising team should additional support be required.

Students experiencing an immediate financial crisis may be eligible for short-term assistance through an SGS Emergency Grant to address non-tuition emergency expenses (e.g., medical emergencies, housing, and food insecurity). Students with graduate funding or major awards may be eligible for an SGS Emergency Loan to help bridge the gap between installments. More information is available on the SGS website.

SGS Graduate Completion Funding

Graduate students experiencing a disruption in their program and/or an impacted trajectory should inquire about local supports and services through their Registrar’s Office or Graduate Unit and refer to the SGS Research and Academic Resiliency and Adaptation Tool Kit webpage for additional information. The School of Graduate Studies offers the following programs:
