Review Student Funding at IHPME to see if you qualify for the funding package.
The $26,000 funding package is meant to cover tuition and other fees plus a stipend for living expenses. The use of these funds is at the discretion of the students.
IHPME will provide a one-time $500 stipend for PhD students in years 1-4 that may be used to cover some research-related expenses. Additional funds may come from supervisors’ research grants. There are also some central supports that can help with some of your research needs, such as:
- Free or discounted licensed software
- Waved or reduced open access publication fees
- School of Graduate Studies Conference Grant
Students in the funded cohort are allowed to work part-time, often as research assistants or teaching assistants. Part-time work does not impact eligibility for funding as long as your annual income does not exceed $26,000. However, we strongly advise students not to work more than 10 hours per week or it could significantly impact your ability to complete the program and achieve program milestones on time. We highly recommend that students who plan to work for more than 10 hours per week apply for the program flex-time or part-time, which allows for an extended timeline (you will not be eligible for the funding package).
The information and FAQs about the flexible-time option is available on the SGS website.
Flex-time students are not eligible for the funding package. They are expected to be self-funded and pay full-time fees for the first four years and reduced fees (equivalent to part-time) thereafter.
However, they may be eligible to apply for major scholarships and fellowships (e.g. Vanier, CIHR doctoral awards), in the first four years when they are registered full-time, depending on the grant’s eligibility criteria.
