Professional Interests

My research focuses on quality improvement and patient safety. I am currently interested in organizational and system strategies to improve performance, governance and leadership in these areas. I am also working on research examining the development of effective integrated systems of care for patients with chronic disease and multi-morbidity, and, in particular the leadership and organizational issues in developing such systems.

I am the Program LeadĀ of the IHPME MSc. Program in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety and teach in that program as well as in the MHSc. I am also co-leading the IDEAS program (Improving and Driving Excellence Across Sectors) funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. IDEAS provides state of the art quality improvement education to teams of clinicians and managers engaged in improving care and care delivery in Ontario.

I have served as a board member of the Health Quality Council of Saskatchewan since 2005 and I am editor of Healthcare Quarterly.

Impact

I have led or co-lead studies of adverse events in acute care, home care and pediatrics and published a number of articles on patient safety with colleagues across the country.

My book, High Performing Healthcare Organizations: Delivering Quality by Design ,and reports based on that analysis has been cited by leaders and researchers in England, the US, Sweden and Canada and noted as a key influence in the development of the Ontario Excellent Care for All legislation

I led the development of Ontario Hospital Report, the first provincial multi-dimensional performance reporting system in Canada, and one of the first balanced scorecard efforts in healthcare.

With colleagues from Montreal, London and Toronto I am carrying out case studies of patient engagement strategies in organizations in four countries and a systematic literature review. Presentations on this work will be delivered in Vancouver and Montreal in 2014.
