MHI2025Y

Strategic Digital Leadership for Health System Transformation

Prerequisite

MHI2025Y  is open to a limited number of EMHI students.  There are no course pre-requisites.  Completion of MHI2020H is helpful, but not a required pre-requisite.

If you are a mid to late career EMHI student in transition to a career in digital health or have immediate career aspirations for senior roles in digital health leadership, this advanced leadership experience is for you.

Enrolment will be open to students from the Rotman School of Management Health MBA Programs, IHPME (SLI, MHSc and EMHI), Faculty of Pharmacy and fourth year medical students, residents and fellows from the Temerty Faculty of Medicine.

This course is offered outside the University’s normal academic schedule in three 3-day intensive modules:  April 28-30, 2025; July 30 to August 1, 2025 and January 12 to 14, 2026.   Enrolment enquiries are now being accepted.

Objectives

  • Students will be assessed on their ability to demonstrate leadership at an advanced level during their assigned health system transformation project.  Projects will be graded on a complete/incomplete basis.  Mentor, peer and faculty feedback will be provided to students on their leadership capabilities and development during the course.  Students projects will be presented in a plenary session at the Future of Health Leadership, Innovation and Policy (FHLIP) conference in February, 2026.
  • This advanced leadership experience will deepen the leadership competencies in communication, collaboration, influence and advocacy, strategy development and change leadership.
  • Upon completion of this experience, students will be better positioned upon graduation to assume leadership roles at more senior levels within the Canadian health system and to effect positive change and transformation in health care.

Description

The course is intentionally shaped to bring together a diverse set of digital health leaders (clinical and nonclinical) across University of Toronto graduate programs in health who wish to work collaboratively to shape and shift digital health policy and use of data and digital technologies to enable broader health system change and transformation.

This course is structured as an experiential learning experience. Enrolled students will be assigned, in interdisciplinary groups, to the leadership teams of actual health system transformation projects.  Student teams will be supervised by senior Canadian digital health executives serving as leadership mentors.

A diverse set of health system transformation projects from across Canada will allow students an opportunity to focus on areas of interest including use of digital tools in care integration, AI for health system transformation, and expansion and use of virtual care in service delivery.

During modules, Faculty will facilitate interactive workshops around learning themes related to leadership including transformation governance; collaborating with interest holders in strategy and execution; creating a culture for transformation; leading transformation in complex systems; and driving value, outcomes and sustainability of transformation initiatives.
