Applications of Complex Systems Concepts to Health Systems Transformation

Professor Yaneer Bar-Yam is Founding President of the New England Complex Systems Institute (NECSI, see http://necsi.edu/ ). He has contributed to the founding of the field of complex systems science, and is known for introducing mathematical rigor, real world application, and educational programs for new concepts and insights in this field. Professor Bar-Yam has published on a wide range of scientific and real world problems ranging from cell biology to global crises. His research on the global food commodity prices and their impacts was cited among the top 10 discoveries in science in 2011 by Wired Magazine. He has advised Congressman Barney Frank as Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, and Congressman Michael Capuano on the financial crisis, and has been invited to speak at the Securities and Exchange Commission. Professor Bar-Yam’s popular book Making Things Work describes the use of complex systems science to address military conflict, healthcare, education, systems engineering, international development, and ethnic violence. He is Chairman of the International Conference on Complex Systems (ICCS), and author of over 200 research papers in professional journals, including in Science, Nature, PNAS, American Naturalist, and Physical Review Letters. His research has been widely cited in the press, and he has appeared on ABC, BBC, CTV, German and Russian national channels. He has been a Visiting Scholar at Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard, the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, and is currently Research Scientist at the MIT Media Laboratory.
