The Relationship between Organizational Structure and the Production of Quality: Evidence from the Nursing Home Sector in Ontario, Canada

Profile of Meghan McMahon

This study is a component of Meghan’s doctoral dissertation. It draws upon Ontario’s experience with long-term care homes to analyze relationships between organizational form and quality of care. Building on the literature that examines health care performance measurement in the context of multiple objectives, a seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) framework with panel data is used estimate the relationship between organizational form and the production of quality, jointly as a system.  Drawing on the joint production estimation strategy, we also examine the presence of trade-offs in the pursuit of multiple dimensions of quality, the relative influence of production inputs for each dimension, and whether there are differences across organizational forms.

Meghan McMahon is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, University of Toronto, where she studies long-term care quality and the effects of policy tools on ensuring quality. She is also a Program Director with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Institute of Health Services and Policy Research where she leads strategic initiatives designed to support innovative research, capacity building, and knowledge translation. She previously worked at the UBC Centre for Health Services and Policy Research and completed an internship with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, both in the area of pharmaceutical policy.
