CCHE Seminar: Peter Austin, ICES

An Introduction to Propensity Score Methods for Estimating the Effects of Treatments using Observational Data

Peter AustinPeter Austin is a Senior Scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences and a Full Professor in the Institute for Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. His research interests include propensity score methods for use in observational studies, predictive methods in cardiovascular research, and statistical methods for the analysis of large health care databases. His research is supported by an operating grant from the CIHR and a Career Investigator award from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

Abstract

Peter Austin will provide a non-technical introduction to the concept of the propensity score and how it can be used to design and analyze observational studies. Four main ways of using the propensity score will be described: matching, stratification, weighting, and covariate adjustment. He will illustrate the application of propensity score methods in a case study. Finally, the use of conventional regression analysis will be contrasted with the use of propensity score methods.
