Examining Inequity in Health Care Using CIHI Data

Health equity is increasingly recognized as a priority for health care systems in Canada, to ensure all people have access to high quality care that is appropriate to them and the opportunity to achieve their full health potential.Profile of Sara Allin A stream of work at CIHI has aimed to support provinces and territories in their effort to measure progress toward this goal. This presentation will describe some of the key activities underway including establishing standards for some of the variables commonly used to conduct stratified analysis (“equity stratifiers”) and demonstrating the feasibility of using Census-Discharge Abstract Database (DAD) linked data to measure inequalities in key health system performance indicators. In this presentation, I will also present an overview of CIHI’s data holdings and the extent to which they capture individual-level “equity stratifiers” and will speak to opportunities for future research.

Sara Allin is a Senior Researcher with the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) in the population health branch, and an Assistant Professor, status only, at the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. Sara’s research interests include comparative health policy, health system performance and equity, with recent papers published in Health Policy, Health Systems Research, and Health Economics Policy & Law.
