Health Informatics Lunch & Learn – Laurette Dube

Share Event

Offered by the Master of Health Informatics Student Group, you are invited to a special seminar presented by Prof. Laurette Dubé. The aim of this seminar is to bring together students, alumni, faculty and friends of IHPME to learn about and discuss current topics in health informatics and decision-making.

Digital Information Technologies for Promoting and Managing Health in a 21st Century on the Brink of the 4th Industrial Revolution

In a society on the brink of the 4th industrial revolution that blurs the line between the physical, digital and biological spheres, challenges and possibilities awaiting health informatics are immense. These bear on providing real-time supports to individuals in their roles of patient, consumer, or citizen in making every day and long term health promoting choices and behavior. They also relate to decision making and practices of professionals supporting individuals in medicine, public health and even non-health organizations and systems that impact health maintenance or disease management at individual and population levels. This seminar will introduce the “Brain-to-Society” (BtS) model of decision and behavior, which capitalizes on digital technologies, advanced statistics and computational models to deeply and comprehensively bridge behavioral/social sciences with our understanding of how the brain, at any given time, acts as the command center guiding human decision-making in response to a diversity of internal signals and external environments that operate across multiple scales. Many of these signals emerge in real-time, directly from real-world contexts shaped by social, commercial, cultural, and political environments. The BtS model is unique in dealing with such complexity through the translation of concrete improvements by having the social and brain sciences, combined with medicine and health sciences, inform each other reciprocally in a full interdisciplinary translational paradigm.

Dr. Dubé is a Full Professor and holds the James McGill Chair of Consumer and Lifestyle Psychology and Marketing at the Desautels Faculty of Management of McGill University, Canada. Her research interests bear on the study of affects and behavioural economic processes underlying consumption and lifestyle behaviour and how such knowledge can inspire more effective health and marketing communications in both real-life and technology-supported media. She is the Founding Chair and Scientific Director of the McGill Centre for the Convergence of Health and Economics. The MCCHE was created to foster partnerships among scientists and decision-makers from all sectors of society to encourage a more ambitious notion of what can be done for more effective health management and novel pathways for social and business innovation.
