Roadmap

This at a glance guide will help you navigate what to expect in the CEHCR MSc program. The roadmap timeline may be altered to take account of leave granted for special circumstances. The checkpoints outlined below are feasible, and while there are no automatic penalties levied on a student who fails to meet them, timely completion of the program requires meeting these targets, typically within the proposed timeframes. Please remember that full-time students have a maximum of three years to complete their degree.  SGS General Regulations – 5.5 Time Limit

Year 1 (Thesis-based)

  1. Complete coursework (desirable completion: end of year 1,  acceptable: 1.5 years). Consult degree requirements.
  2. Proposal Step 1
    • Confirm proposed thesis and committee (recommended completion: December / acceptable completion: by end of year 1)
    • The Thesis Committee Step 1 form must be completed prior to the student and supervisor signing off on the Memorandum of Understanding.
  3. Proposal Step 2
    • Development of full thesis proposal (desirable completion: end of year 1, acceptable 1.5 years)
    • Transfer Proposal to PhD replaces this step.  Students must transfer to the PhD program within 24 months of starting their MSc degree. 
  4. Present thesis proposal at hospital based clinical epidemiology rounds. (desirable completion: end of year 1, acceptable 1.5 years)
  5. Submit revised thesis proposal to CEHCR program assistant for final approval one week after proposal defence (desirable completion: end of year 1, acceptable: 1.5 years-2 years) 
  6. After the proposal has been presented and approved by the program director, apply for ethics approvals, UofT and hospital REB.  
  7. Meet with your thesis committee minimum twice annually (submit meeting report to graduate assistant)

Students are automatically enrolled in HAD5301H Introduction to Clinical Epidemiology for the summer term

 Years 2-3 (Thesis-based)

  1. Meet with your thesis committee minimum twice annually (submit meeting report to graduate assistant) 
  2. Complete the Tri-Council Ethics Tutorial before the thesis defence.
  3. Thesis defense (acceptable: 2-3 years)
    • Review handbook for steps leading up to the defence
  4. Depending on the results of the defence, students will have Editorial Corrections (1 month to complete), or Minor Revisions (3 months to complete), or Present Form (no corrections)
  5. Upload completed thesis to ProQuest  (by mid-September for November convocation, or by mid-April for June convocation)

Year 1 (Course-based)

10 required courses (5.0 FCE). Students typically take three courses per term. Consult the degree requirements.

Attend program orientation in July

Students meet with the Associate Program Director prior to the fall. Students must bring their progress report to this meeting.  Discuss program timelines and courses
