Roadmap

This at a glance guide will help you navigate what to expect in the HSR MSc program. 

This roadmap is based on a five term completion for a full-time student in under two years.


Pre-Entry-Spring/Summer

  1. Intake meeting (emphasis lead and supervisor). Discuss program timelines, courses, and funding
  2. Submit annual income declaration form
  3. Connect with your supervisor and discuss timelines and any potential scholarship opportunities
  4. Register for fall courses mid-August

Year 1

  1. Complete the 6 required courses – usually taken in the first year (dependent on your emphasis)
  2. Form the thesis committee (minimum 2 members including your supervisor)
  3. Draft thesis proposal with supervisor and committee
  4. Meet with your thesis committee minimum twice annually (submit meeting report to graduate assistant)

Attend program orientation in September

Take 3 half-year courses 

Defer tuition in Acorn if needed (deadline is third week of August)

Apply for scholarships e.g. CGSM (optional, but recommended for anyone whose masters will extend into year 2 )

Register for winter courses (October) 

Take 3 half-year courses 

Apply for scholarships e.g. OGS (optional, but recommended for anyone whose masters will extend into year 2)

Register for spring-summer courses (late-March) 

Submit ethics board review proposal (if needed)

Take a course or two if you have not completed your course load

Annual progress meeting with Emphasis Lead & supervisor to review program progress and funding (arranged by Emphasis Leads)

Collect and analyze data for your thesis; begin drafting initial thesis chapters as appropriate

Submit annual income declaration form

Year 2

  1. IHPME Y1 funding ends. Review and ensure your Y2 finances
  2. Meet with your thesis committee minimum twice annually (submit meeting report to graduate assistant)
  3. Important dates as you prepare to defend

Write thesis 

Identify internal and external appraiser and submit defence form to IHPME (6 weeks before defence, see thesis handbook for steps leading to the defence)

Defence

Complete thesis revisions, submit final thesis to SGS (by April for June convocation or September for November convocation – see SGS Calendar for specific dates)
