Study Options

In order to make our research-based programs more accessible to students, we have full-time and flex-time study options available. However, most classes are still held between 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Monday–Friday.

Students must declare their intentions to study full-time or flex-time when they apply to their program, and cannot switch their status once the program begins. 

Full-time

Typically completed in 4 years

Full-time students pay full-time fees for the duration of their program and have up to six years to complete the requirements of the degree. Full-time students are eligible to receive the funding package.

Up to 6 years  (4 years to achieve candidacy – thesis proposal acceptance)

Flex-time

Typically completed in 4-6 years

Flex-time status provides greater flexibility in completing the degree requirements and complements full-time employment. 

Flex-time students pay full-time fees for the first four years of their program. They can pay part-time fees for subsequent years after completing and submitting a program transfer form.

Flex-time students generally complete their program in six years, but have up to eight years to complete the requirements of the degree. 

Flex-time students are not eligible to receive the funding package.

Up to 8 years (4 years to achieve candidacy- thesis proposal acceptance)

Full-time (MSc-PhD transfer)

Typically completed in 5 years

Students who have previously completed a non-thesis master’s degree and wish to pursue a PhD can apply for the thesis-based MSc. This intention to transfer must be indicated on the application, (e.g., letter of intent should indicate a desire to transfer to the PhD stream) for consideration.

Up to 6 years (5 years to achieve candidacy-thesis proposal acceptance)
