Roadmap

Year 1

  1. Proposal Step 1
    • Confirm proposed thesis and committee (acceptable completion: by end of year 1)
    • The Thesis Committee Step 1 form must be completed prior to the student and supervisor signing off on the Memorandum of Understanding.
  2. Meet with your thesis committee minimum twice annually (submit meeting report to graduate assistant)

Attend program orientation in July

Students meet with the Program Director prior to the fall. Students must bring their progress report to this meeting.  Discuss program timelines and courses

Students are automatically enrolled in HAD5301H Introduction to Clinical Epidemiology for the summer term

Take Intro to SAS Workshop

Register for fall and winter courses mid-July

Students should take the comprehensive course HAD5311 in the fall once they have transferred to PhD or have entered the PhD program. This course consists of four seminars every fall.  Students must complete all four to achieve candidacy and they can be taken any fall (see requirements to achieve candidacy).

Register for spring courses mid-March

Year 2

  1. Proposal Step 2: Development of full thesis proposal (desirable/acceptable completion: in year 2)
  2. Present thesis proposal at hospital-based Clin Epi Rounds (desirable/acceptable completion: in year 2)
  3. Complete course work (desirable: 1.5 – 2 years, acceptable: 3 years). Consult the degree requirements.
  4. Meet with your thesis committee minimum twice annually (submit meeting report to graduate assistant)

Year 3-4

  1. Students in PhD must achieve candidacy (have taken all courses, including the comprehensive course) within the first three years.
  2. Meet with your thesis committee minimum twice annually (submit meeting report to graduate assistant)
  3. Complete the Tri-Council Ethics Tutorial before the thesis defence.
  4. Thesis defense (desirable: year 3-4, acceptable: year 6)
  5. Review handbook for steps leading up to the defence
  6. Depending on the results of the defence, students will have Editorial Corrections (1 month to complete), or Minor Revisions (3 months to complete), or Present Form (no corrections)
  7. Upload completed thesis to ProQuest  (by mid-September for November convocation, or by mid-April for June convocation)
